The average rate of change is:

(f(-1)-f(-4))/(-1+4)=(f(-1)-f(-4))/(3)
f(-1)=2(-1^2)+4=6
f(-4)=2(-4^2)+4=2(16)+4=36

then computing the first formula, the average rate of change of f(x) is

(6-36)/(3)=-10
