You start driving north for 5 miles, turn right, and drive east for another 12 miles

The angle between north and east = 90

So, x is the hypotenuse of the triangle

x=\sqrt[]{5^2+12^2}=\sqrt[]{25+144}=\sqrt[]{169}=13

so, the length = 13 miles

You start driving north for 5 miles, turn right, and drive east for another 12 miles-example-1
