Given that:

- The width of each of John’s notebooks is:

(3)/(4)in

- The space remaining on his bookshelf is:

36in

Let be "x" the number of notebooks that will fit in John's bookshelf.

Knowing that:

(3)/(4)in=0.75in

You can set up the following proportion:

(1)/(0.75)=(x)/(36)

Now you have to solve for "x":

\begin{gathered} ((1)/(0.75))(36)=(x)/(36) \\ \\ (36)/(0.75)=x \end{gathered}
x=48

Hence, the answer is:

48\text{ }notebooks
