SOLUTION

The total amout of solution given is

(2)/(3)\text{liter}

From thequestion, 1/2 of the solution is used, then the amount of solution used for the experiment will be

(2)/(3)*(1)/(2)=(2*1)/(3*2)=(2)/(6)=(1)/(3)\text{liters }

Hence

The amount of solution the scientist use is 1/3 litres
