Messina, Italy was hit was a huge earthquake which had a magnitude of at least 7.5 on the modernized Richter Scale. The devastating part is that all of the buildings that were close to the coast were bombarded with fourty-foot waves. So to put it simply, the tsunami was caused by a sea displacement which was obviously caused by the earthquake that was occurring.
