atoms of the same chemical element dont always have the same mass because alothiugh the number of protons in the nucleus is the same for all atoms of the same element, the number of nuetrons is not.
why does the atomic mass of an atom sometimes not match the number on the periodic table?
atoms with the same number of protons, but different numbers of neutrons are called isotopes. Because the number of neutrons can vary for a given element. The mass numbers of different atoms of an element may also very, for example helium atoms have three neutrons instead of two.
