Let x be the number we do not know.

The you would set up the equation like

2x + 3 = x - 6

+6

2x+9 = x

-2x

9 = -1 x

/-1

=-9

To check math:

2(-9) + 3 = -9 - 6

-18 + 3 = -15

-9 - 6 = -15
