Two people walk from different parts of the city to meet each other. When they meet, they figure out that one of them walked a quarter of the way plus 0.6 km. The other person walked twice as far. How far apart were the people originally?

Answer:

They were 7.2 km apart originally

Explanation:

Let the original distance separating the two people be x

One person walked quarter of this distance + 0.6

=> x/4 + 0.6

The other person walked twice this distance

=> 2 (x /4 + 0.6) = x/2 + 1.2

Since they meet at a common point along the way, the sum of the distances covered = original distance

=> x/4 + 0.6 + x/2 + 1.2 = x

=> 3x/4 + 1.8 = x

=> x = 3x/4 + 1.8

=> x - 3x/4 = 1.8

=> 1x/4 = 1.8

=> x = 1.8 x 4 = 7.2 km

Check:
Person 1 walked 7.2/4 + 0.6 = 1.8+0.6 = 2.4

The other person walked twice as far = 2 x 2.4 = 4.8

2.4 + 4.8 = 7.2
