It gave the number of red pencils and orange pencils. Let's add them up.

  • 4x^2+3x=R+O

He has twice as many black pens as red pens.

  • B=2R

  • B=2(4x^2)=8x^2

He has five less pink pencils than he has orange pencils.

  • P=O-5

  • P=3x-5

Let's add up all the values we found.

  • R+B+O+P=4x^2+8x^2+3x+3x-5

  • =12x^2+6x-5

In its simplest form:

  • x^2+(1)/(2)x-(5)/(12)
