One inlet pipe can fill an empty pool in 6 hours, and a drain can empty the pool in 15 hours. How long will it take the pipe to fill the pool if the drain is left open? Express your answer as a reduced fraction.

Explanation:

  • we need to know how fast it is filling up per hour:
  • so we do 100=6x
  • we divide 6 by both sides

  • (100)/(6) =(6x)/(6)
  • we get x=16.66666667
  • now we need to know what %will drain per hr
  • so the equation is 100=15y
  • now we need to divide by both sides

  • (100)/(15) =(15y)/(15)
  • and we get y=6.666666667
  • now that we have the input (x) and output (y) per hour we are going to find the difference
  • 16.66666667-6.666666667=10
  • now we know that if we leave the drain open while we fill it, each hour it will fill %10
  • now we have to figure out how many hours it will take
  • 1=0.1x (0.1 is %10 in decimal form)(1 is %100 in decimal form)
  • we divide 0.1 into both sides

  • (1)/(0.1)=(0.1x)/(0.1)
  • and we get 10 hours
