Greg rented a truck for one day. there was a base fee of $20.95, and there was an additional charge of 89 cents for each mile driven.greg had to pay $168.69 when he returned the truck. for how many miles did he drive the truck?

You can logic it out: Greg paid 168.68, but 20.95 of that was a fee.

168.69 - 20.95 is 147.74.

147.74 is the total of the per mile charges.

147.74 ÷ .89 = 166

He travelled 166 miles. (166×.89 is 147.74)

OR, do algebra (you will find these are all the same calculations... because algebra is supposed to model real life)

Let C = Greg's total cost.

Let m = number of miles travelled.

Cost is .89 per mile times the number of miles plus the base fee. In algebra this is:

C = .89m + 20.95

Substitute 168.69 for C, Greg's total cost.

168.69=.89m+20.95

Subtract 20.95

147.74 = .89m

Divide by .89

166 = m

Greg drove 166 miles.
