aimee cut a string that was originally 126 centimeters long into two pieces so that one piece is twice as long as the other. how long is each piece?

Let's use the variable , x , to represent the length of one pf the pieces.

Then we can write the following expression to represent the length of the other piece (using the description in the problem): 2x + 58

Since the total length of the string was 166 cm, we can write and solve the following equation to determine x x + 2x + 58 = 166

Now combine like terms and use inverse operations to solve:

3x + 58 = 166

3x + 58 -58 = 166 - 58

3x = 108

3x/3 = 108/ 3

x = 36 cm

One piece of the string will be 36 cm long.

The other piece will be 2 • 36 + 58 or 72 + 58 = 130 cm long
