The difference is that -5/8 is a negative, and 1/4 is a positive. But if were to multiply 1/4 & 2 it will equal 2/8. Since the fractions are into 8's. And if we were to use baosulte value, 5/8 would be greater. But to subtract -5/8 & 1/4, we act like their both positive, & change 1/4 to 2/8. Then substance 5/8 to 2/8 will equal -3/8. And if you're a 7th grader then you would know that you would have to add zero pairs.
