let x be the smaller number and y the larger number , the

x + y = 4x ( subtract x from both sides )

y = 3x → (1)

2y - x = 20 → (2)

substitute y = 3x into (2)

2(3x) - x = 20

6x - x = 20

5x = 20 ( divide both sides by 5 )

x = 4

substitute x = 4 into (1)

y = 3x = 3 × 4 = 12

smaller number is 4 and larger number is 12
