A 12.0 kg bucket is lowered vertically by a rope in which there is 163 N of tension at a given instant. Is the acceleration up or down?

My question here is that if the bucket is being lowered, isn't the acceleration already down? So why does the answer say that the acceleration is up?

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

Given:

m = 12.0 kg

T = 163 N

g = 9.8 m/s²

___________

a - ?

Resting bucket weight:

P = m*g = 12.8*9.8 ≈ 125 Н

P < T (125 < 163),

This means that the bucket is being lifted with acceleration upwards!

T = m*(g + a)

(g + a) = T / m

a =T / m - g

a = 163 / 12.0 - 9.8 ≈ 3.8 m/s²

Answer:

up

Step-by-step explanation:

If not moving then tension would be 12.0 * 9.81 = 117.7 N

More N means going up Less N means going down

Going UP
