Summary:

Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in 1818 at Maryland. But this did not prevent him from struggling his life and striving for knowledge. The book "Learning to Read and Write" is an autobiography he tells about how he succeeds with his literacy. During that time and environment, all slaves were not considered worthy to learn to read and write. Since those skills would have helped the slaves understand the nature of slavery and begin to struggle to freedom, just like Douglass has done later in the book. The ideas that he has gathered throughout his childhood life, has transformed into the view that slavery should be abolished. Frederick not only highlights the importance of literacy, but he also highlights the importance of having and using the correct methods and knowledge to set free.
