a. powerful emotional appeals

Methodists also lead the way in sponsoring another form of religious education - the camp meeting. These large gatherings attracted converts through powerful emotional appeals. The most famous of the revivals, at Cane Ridge, Kentucky, in 1801, lasted over a week and attracted a crowd estimated at between ten and twenty thousand. Many of those in attendance experienced ecstatic conversion experiences; some fainted, shook violently, and barked like dogs. Camped out in tents on the hillside, the Cane Ridge community was by far the largest settlement in the state of Kentucky during the revival.
