In the South, resistance was more widespread. Five confederations in the South, the so-called Five Civilized Tribes - the Choctaw, Chickasaws, Creek peoples, Cherokee, and Seminoles - clung tenaciously to their land and forced the government to demonstrate how far it would go in order to clear land for white settlement.
