It is important to have checks and balances because without them power won't be split and you'll have a situation much like The Articles of Confederation. In The Articles of Confederation there wasn't any power given to the Executive branch, without checks and balances there will be governmental branches without power or even worse, a lack of governmental branches. There would be no agreement among states, and the entire country would go crazy.
