Answer: x = 18

Isolating a variable: rearranging the equation to make the variable on side of the equation and the others on the other side

1. Collect like terms

2. Inverse operations to isolate

3. simplify if necessary

Calculations:

3x -14 +3x +9= 103

Collect like terms:
6x -5 =103

  • 3x and 3x are alike and -14 +9 are alike

Inverse operations:

6x = 103 +5

6x= 108

(6x)/(6)=(108)/(6)

x= 18
