Answer:

Causes:

  • American agitation over increased British taxation & control.
  • Increasing violence in American protesting (the British).
  • Some felt that peaceful resistance (i.e. boycotting) wasn't enough.
  • Recent charter to the British East India Company (tea act)-colonists felt that Britain was attempting to undercut/undermine the American tea industry.
  • Patriotic colonists wanted to reject British attempts at compromise/diplomacy (cancellation of import duties).
  • An overall determined American desire for independence.

Effects:

  • The king (George III) was outraged,
  • Passing of the Coercive Acts (four of them) to pay for the tea and submit to British imperial authority
  • Patriot anger over coercive acts - enforced Patriotism, bolstered colonial unity and strengthened the fight for independence.

Coercive Acts: 1. Closed Boston harbor to shipping (import or exports), 2. Massachusetts Government Act: prohibited most colony meetings, 3. New Quartering Act: mandated new barracks to British troops, and 4. Justice Act: allowed trials of capital crimes to be transferred to British courts.
