Why did Arabic numerals replace Roman numerals?

because there are only ten individual Arabic numerals, the Arabic system is much easier to do math with. By using a unique, one-digit numeral to represent each of the numbers from 0-9 (instead of the Roman eight, VIII, for example, which is four digits long), much more complex math becomes much easier to perform and write down and prove.
