Explanation:

perimeter = 2 x length + 2 x width

plug in the values

46 = 2(3x+2)+2(x+1)

distribute the 2 into the fraction by multiplying

46 = 6x+4+2x+2

add similar components

46 = 8x+6

subtract 6 to both sides

40 = 8x

divide by 8

5 = x
