Under the feudal system, a handful of wealthy noblemen controlled much of the land. This was because the king would give out land to those that supported and helped him, or in exchange for military service. On this land that the nobility owned, serfs would live and work for them. Serfs were tied to the land and not an individual, and because of this, they could not own land. Finally, until the early renaissance, merchants and businessmen were few and far between, especially in the feudal system.
