so 3x + 24

this is equal to 16 less than 7 times x

so 3x + 24 = 7x - 16

we now solve for x

3x + 24 = 7x - 16

add 16 to both sides

3x + 24 + 16 = 7x - 16 + 16

3x + 40 = 7x

subtract 3x from both sides

3x - 3x + 40 = 7x - 3x

40 = 4x

divide both sides by 4

40/4 = 10

4x / 4 =x

x=10
