At the beginning of the 1850s, despite sectional friction, no one thought the United States would be engaged in a civil war between the North and the South by the end of the decade. What events in the 1850s made southern secession and civil war more likely? Which may have constituted a “tipping point” after which secession and war were difficult, if not impossible, to avoid? Please respond in an answer befitting an AP student.

-politically (gov control within states., Abraham Lincoln..)
-economic (territories, cotton..)
-socially (slavery rights, dred scott
then list the key events that occurred for each topic
-talk about slavery overall and division and add many examples/terms for each if this is an LEQ and connect it to thesis
