in a school board election between two candidates, 539 votes were cast. George received 23 more votes than abe. How many votes did each receive

A = votes to Abe

G = votes to George

we know that all votes together were 539, so A + G = 539, we also know that George got 23 more than Abe, so "G = A + 23"

\stackrel{Abe's}{A}~~ + ~~\stackrel{George's}{(A+23)}~~ = ~~\stackrel{total}{539}\implies 2A+23=539\implies 2A=516 \\\\\\ A=\cfrac{516}{2}\implies \boxed{\stackrel{Abe}{A=258}}\hspace{12em}\boxed{\underset{George}{\stackrel{258~~ + ~~23}{281}}}
