We have one side given = 18
The angle opposite it is 83°

The ratio =18/sin(83)


Unknown x has an opposite angle of 28°
The ratio is x /sin(28)

Both ratios must equal each other

So

x /sin(28) = 18/sin(83)

Multiplying both sides by sin(28) isolates the x

x/sin(28) x sin(28) = 18/sin(83) x sin(28)

So x = [18/sin(83)] x sin(28) = 18 x sin(28)/sin(83)

Using a calculator we get

x = 8.51394 which can be rounded to the nearest tenth as 8.5
