In this equation why does the 4 turn positive.

Question:

x/2-x-4/6=5/3

Solution:

x/2-x-4/6=5/3
3x-x+4/6=5/3
2x+4/6=5/3
3(2x+4)=6×5
6x+12=30
6x=30-12
6x=18
x=18/6=3

Answer is -14/3

Step by step

I think this is a “find the error” question

Let’s solve it

x/2 -x -4/6 = 5/3

First I want to get the constant on one side
Add 4/6 to both sides

x/2 -x -4/6 + 4/6 = 5/3 + 4/6

Now let’s add our fractions, 5/3 is the same as 10/6 to add to 4/6 = 14/6

Simplify 14/6 to 7/3

Now we have

x/2 -x = 7/3

We know that x/2 is the same as 1/2x and we know x is the same as 1x

So now we have

1/2x - 1x = 7/3

Subtract our variable

-1/2x = 7/3

Divide both sides by -1/2 to solve for x
When we divide a fraction, we flip the divisor and multiply. The -2/1 and -1/2 become 1.

-2/1 * -1/2 x = 7/3 * -2/1

x = -14/3
