When a cat grooms itself, it uses its tongue to catch loose and dead hair, which is then swallowed. The majority of this hair passes through the digestive tract without any problems, but some of the hair gets caught in the stomach. This hair can form a hairball. The cat will usually vomit to rid itself of the hairball. Why does the cat need to rid itself of the hairball?
