The Missouri Compromise had three parts. First, Maine would become independent from Massachusetts and be a free state. Second, Missouri would be a state with slavery. Finally, there was leftover land from the Louisiana Purchase. If this land created more states, those states would not allow slavery. Clay drew an imaginary line on a U.S. map. It traced the 36-30 parallel line. New states above this line could not have slavery.
