“I don’t see the money . . . and I bet I never shall.” Herbert’s suggestive wish foreshadowed Herbert was going to die, thus creating suspense because the readers would want to know when this event would occur or how. It’s ironic because the reader didn’t expect him to wish for his own death by accident. It also creates suspense for the readers because they want to know what will happen next, how will they deal with the fact their son died in such a horrific way by merely wishing for money.
