With systems of equations, one way to solve them is by adding. Just by adding the two, we could reduce this to a one-variable problem. But to do that, we first multiply the first equation by 2:

2(2x + 2y = 12) => 4x + 4y = 24.

Adding this and the second equation gives us:

5x = 30

x = 6
