-35 = 5 + 7(a + 2)

expand right side:

-35 = 5 + 7a + 14

subtract 19 from both sides:

-35 - 19 = 5 + 7a + 14 - 19

-54 = 7a

divide both sides by 7:

-54/7 = 7a/7

-54/7 = a

or

7.7143 = a
