Explanation:

7x + 2y = 24 → (1)

x + 2y = 0 ( subtract 2y from both sides )

x = - 2y → (2)

substitute x = - 2y into (1)

7(- 2y) + 2y = 24

- 14y + 2y = 24

- 12y = 24 ( divide both sides by - 12 )

y = - 2

substitute y = - 2 into (2)

x = - 2(- 2) = 4

solution is (4, - 2 )
