Explanation:

so, how many minutes are in a year ?

60 minutes in 1 hour.

24 hours in a day.

365 days in a typical year.

=

60×24×365 = 525,600 minutes.

that means we are losing

5 × 525,600 = 2,628,000 oz of water in a year.

2,628,000 oz are

2,628,000 / 128 = 20,531.25 gallons.

a)

20,531.25 gallons of water are wasted in a year.

b)

1000 gal cost $11.17.

so, how many units of 1000 gal are in 20,531.25 ?

20,531.25 / 1000 = 20.53125

therefore, the additional costs are

20.53125 × 11.17 = $229.3340625 ≈ $229.33

Answer:

= 20,531.25 gallons of water are wasted per year.

= $229.33 is being spent on the leak

Explanation:

A faucet leaks 5 oz of water per minute.

a) How many gallons of water are wasted in a year? (A gallon contains 128 oz.)

= 5 oz per minute * 60 minutes in an hour * 24 hours in a day * 365 days in a year

= 5 * 60 * 24 * 365

= 2,628,000 oz of water is wasted in a year.

Because there are 128 oz per gallon:

= 2,628,000/128

= 20,531.25 gallons of water are wasted per year.

b) If water costs $11.17 per 1000 gal, how much additional money is being spent on the water bill?

20,531.25/1,000 = 20.53125

so:

= $11.17 * 20.53125

= $229.3340625

rounded = $229.33 is being spent on the leak
