A store is having a sale on chocolate chips and walnuts. For 5 pounds of chocolate chips and 3 pounds of walnuts, the total cost is $27. For 7 pounds of chocolate chips and 9 pounds of walnuts, the total cost is $51.

Find the cost for each pound of chocolate chips and each pound of walnuts.

Explanation:

let X represent chocolate chips and y represent walnuts

5x + 3y = 27

7x + 9y = 51

we solve the above equation using elimination method to get price of the items bought. we eliminate x

(5x + 3y = 27)7

(7x + 9y = 51 )5

35x + 21y = 189

35x + 45y = 255

we subtract

-25 y = -66

y = 2.64

we substitute in the first equation to get X

5x + 3(2.64) = 27

5x = 19.08

X = 3.816
