Given that Mathew takes a train which takes 3hrs to travel 210 miles from Manchester to London and takes 2hrs to travel to travel from London to Bournemouth. We need to find out the average speed of the journey.

We know that ,

Average speed:-

\dashrightarrow v_av =(Total\ distance\ travelled)/(Total\ time \ taken)

here ,

  • total distance= 210 +120 = 330 miles
  • total time = 3+2 = 5hrs

Hence the average speed will be ,

\dashrightarrow v_av =(330\ miles)/(5\ hrs)=\boxed{66\ miles/hr}

And we are done!

Answer:

  • The train's average speed over the whole journey is 66 mph.

Explanation:

To find the average speed first find the total time and distance.

  • t = 3 + 2 = 5 hours
  • d = 210 + 120 = 330 miles

The average speed is:

  • Speed = total distance / total time

  • s = 330/5 = 66 mph
