Explanation:

-(w+4)+2(4w-4)

Step 1: Distribute

In this equation, there are two things being distributed, the -(w+4) and the 2(4w-4). Looking at -(w+4) makes you think that there is nothing to distribute but actually there is. Treat the - like a -1 so that it looks like -1(w+4) and then we distribute normally.

-1 x w = -w

-1 x 4 = -4

Put it together and you have:

-w-4

Then the 2(4w-4), with this, we need to distribute the 2 into the 4w and -4. To do this, you just multiply the numbers.

2 x 4w = 8w

2 x -4 = -8

Put those together and you have:

8w-8

After distributing, the equation should like:

-w-4+8w-8

Step 2: Combine Like-Terms

In the remaining equation, there are 4 things we can combine. The -w and 8w, and the -4 and -8. The reason that we are doing it in this order is because you cannot combine a number with a variable, like combining -4 with 8w. Now we just add (or subtract).
