we have to get X on its own so we minus the 2 from both sides first.

we should get:


4x = 14 - 2

which is also


4x = 12

now we need to simplify this, so we'll divide both sides by 4 since it's a common factor between 4 and 12 (they can both be divided by 4)

so we should get


x = 3

because 12 divided by 4 is 3, and 4 divided by 4 is 1.

(1x is the same as saying x)
