Molly has lots of legos at home but is always looking for more. She found a
good deal online to buy more, enough to double her collection. Her mother
thought she had too many so she allowed her to keep a third of her legos
and made her donate the rest. In time, however, she was able to buy
sixteen less than three times her original amount. If she has 1634 legos
now, what was her original amount?

Answer:

495

Explanation:

initial amount = x

donated = 2/3x

left with = 1/3x

bought = (3x-16)

total now = 1634

Therefore, (3x-16) + 1/3x = 1634

Multiply through by 3 = 9x-48+1x = 4902

10x = 4950

x = 495
