Adding Fractions:

You add the numerators.

ex) 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4
ex) 3/4 + 3/4 = 6/4 or 1 2/4

to change the improper fraction to a
proper fraction if the numerator (top number) is larger than the denominator (bottom number), you put the numerator and take the denominator and put equal amounts of however many times the denominator can go into it. (for my example: 4 went into 6 only 1 time, so the whole number is 1 leaving 2/4 left on the fraction.)

to add proper fractions with a whole number, you add the whole numbers together and then add the fractions separately. then put the sums together to get the answer.

ex) 1 2/4 + 3 1/4 = 4 3/4
ex) 2 3/4 + 2 1/3 = 5 1/12

to add fractions with a different denominator, you have to make the denominators the same first before anything else. so, you can multiply the denominators to get an even fraction for each. (for example, multiply the denominators 4 and 3, to get 12.) Then however much each numerator had to multiply to get to the new denominator (12), multiply the numerators with the same amount. (for example, 3/4 • 3/3 = 9/12 and 1/3 • 4/4 = 4/12.) Now you can add the fractions together as before. Add the numerators together. (9/12 + 4/12 = 13/12 = 1 1/12.)

Now that you have your fractions added, you can add the sum to the whole numbers. Since the whole numbers were 2 + 2 = 4. and 4 + 1 1/12 = 5 1/12.

Those are the basics of adding fractions, hope this helps. Let me know if you need help with anything else.
