x = -0.5

y = -4

Explanation:

Don't worry! Just add the two equations together first to get rid of the y.

5x + y = −6.5

4x − y = 2

9x = -4.5

if 9x = -4.5, then divide both sides by 9 to get -0.5.

so x = -0.5.

If x = -0.5, plug it into the equation. Let's do the second one:

4(-0.5) - y = 2

-2 - y = 2

add 2 to both sides

-y = 4

so y = -4.
