Explanation:

let ,

pencil be x and ruler be y

so for Janet equation is

9x + 2y = £3.60 (eqⁿ 1)

for John

13x + 3y = £5.30 (eqⁿ 2)

now, multiply (eqⁿ 1) by 3 and (eqⁿ 2) by 2 so we got,

27x + 6y = 10.80 (eqⁿ 3)

and

26x + 6y = 10.60 (eqⁿ 4)

now, subtract (eqⁿ 4) from (eqⁿ 3) we got,

x = 0.2

since we got the value of x than let's find value of y

(eqⁿ 1)

9(0.2) + 2y = 3.60

1.8 + 2y = 3.60

2y = 3.6 - 1.8 = 1.8

y = 1.8/2 = 0.9 ans.

therefore , x = £0.2 and y = £0.9

hence, value of pencil = £0.2 and ruler = £0.9.

hope this answer helps you dear...take care and may u have a great day ahead!
