Nova Scotia

During the war, loyalists of all persuasions suffered from punitive laws and hostile neighbors. After Yorktown, many began to emigrate. Overall, 80,000 to 100,000 Americans fled or were banished for political reasons during the war era, many in mass emigrations in 1782 and 1783. Some wealthier loyalists sailed to England, where the British government compensated them for their lost property. More sought new homes in other parts of British America, especially Nova Scotia. These Americans were refugees from a war they had lost, and from a colonial society that had vanished.
