The sun of two numbers is 32 and their difference is 4. What are the numbers

y = 14, x= 18.

Explanation:

let the two numbers be x and y.

sum of the no.s x + y= 32•••••••••(I)

difference. x - y = 4 ••••••••••(ii)

eliminate x by subtracting equation I from ii

x-x+y-(-y) = 32-4

2y= 28

divide both sides by 2

y = 14.

now solve for x by substituting eqn I

x + y = 32

x + 14 = 32

x = 32-14

x = 18

so, the two numbers we can add and subtract to give us 32 and 4 are

18 and 14.
