Explanation:

Say the student has x $1 bills.

Then they have 11 - x $5 bills.

31 = 1 * x + (11 - x) * 5 = 55 - 4x

4x = 55 - 31 = 24

x = 6

So, they have 6 $1 bills and 11 - 6 = 5 $5 bills
