Explanation:

the perimeter of a rectangle is

2×length + 2×width

for our rectangle here that means

2×(5x) + 2×(x - 3) = 42

10x + 2x - 6 = 42

12x - 6 = 42

12x = 48

x = 4

length = 5x = 5×4 = 20 in.

width = x - 3 = 4 - 3 = 1 in.
