Explanation:

.30*12+x=.40(12+x)

3.6+x=4.8+.40x

x-.40x=4.8-3.6

.6x=1.2

x=1.2/.6

x=2 gallons of acid needs to be added.

Proof:

.30*12+2=.4(12+2)

3.6+2=.4*14

5.6=5.6
