1st number = x

2nd number = y

11 and 17

Let the smaller number be x. The other number is x + 6

(We know that because they differ by
6. One is 6 more and the other is 6 less.)

Hence, The sum is 28

x + x + 6 = 28

2x + 6 = 28

2 x = 28 − 6

2x = 22

x = 11

Using TWO variables - you need TWO equations.

Let the numbers be x and y

x − y = 6 → A

x + y = 28 → B

2x = 34 ← A + B

x = 17

y = 17 − 6 = 11

The numbers are 11 and 1
